DIANA KRALL

DIANA KRALL

If Helen of Troy was “the face that launched a thousand ships,” then Diana Krall is the face that launched a thousand – make that hundreds of thousands – new male fans of contemporary light Jazz. On her new release WALLFLOWERS, the 8-time Juno winning jazz pianist strays from the music of her jazz influences to mine the solid gold catalogues of rock legends like The Beatles, Elton John and The Eagles, with a few pop standards from the 60s and 70s thrown in for good measure. When it works it’s brilliant – Krall and fellow Canadian crooner Michael Buble are a perfect match for the Gilbert O’Sullivan classic "Alone Again (Naturally)". When it doesn’t, it’s because the song she’s interpreting is just too far from who Diana is as an artist to be remotely credible – think elegant jazz vocalist Diana Krall doing the Eagles’ classic “Desperado” and you’ll understand. Krall’s voice, however, is as sultry, emotional, magical and melancholy as ever –- so grab your pino grigio, light a fire, and enjoy WALLFLOWERS for what it is…a good soundtrack to a night spent wondering why Elvis Costello gets to bed her and you don't.
