Olde Towne: Homegrown Comedy Flick That Kills

Olde Towne: Homegrown Comedy Flick That Kills

By David DeRocco

There’s been a murder in ye olde towne, and David Green hopes you die laughing about it.

Green, a familiar face on Niagara’s stand-up comedy scene, has once again turned his comedic sensibilities to film making, and the results are purposefully deadly. OLDE TOWNE is the name of the short indie murder mystery set in Niagara-on-the-Lake that Green and his cast of Niagara-based collaborators have just recently wrapped up filming. It chronicles the tale of two detectives who are tasked with solving a murder in the historically quiet and normally uneventful tourist town.

“We shot most of it through November to January,” explained Green, who first took a stab at indie film making with last year’s release, GORGE. “It was produced using totally local talent. All the actors are local, the cast and crew. Even the music was produced locally by Rod Standish. Most of it was shot in Niagara-on-the-Lake but we did do some scenes in Fort Erie and Niagara Falls.”

Green, who is also the founder of the upcoming second annual Niagara Comedy Festival in May, said he’s always been interested in channeling his comic creativity into film.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to get into, and we finally made the leap last year with Gorge. I learned a lot from the first film, and on this one we just brought in a lot of people collaborating together.”

The film makes its debut Saturday, April 14th at the Seneca Queen Theatre in Niagara Falls during an evening that also includes stand-up comedy and live music. Thanks in part to sponsors – including Big Texas Niagara and Lakeview Vineyard Equipment – the evening’s proceeds will be going to support the Niagara Falls Humane Society. After the premier Green hopes to take the 23-minute flick on tour in the hopes of gaining exposure through indie film fests.
